AI Is a Tool, Not a Tower of Babel

Babel warns against human pride, not every act of building or skill. This essay reads Genesis 11 as a lesson about motive and stewardship.

People who feel uneasy about AI often think of Babel. In that Bible story, people tried to build a tower up to the heavens and were scattered. It is a strong picture. But it is the wrong picture for the tool, and getting the picture right matters.

What Babel was actually about

My reading of Genesis 11 is that the sin was not building, skill, ambition, or the tower's size. Their words show their motive: "let us make a name for ourselves" (Genesis 11:4). The people wanted to raise themselves up, seek their own glory, and climb to God's place. The bricks were not the issue. The motive was.

Tools are not motives

A tool can be used for good or harm. The same hammer builds a church or breaks a window. The same printing press spreads the gospel or lies. AI is the same. We can use it for pride or service. The tool does not choose. We do.

The better picture: stewardship

Stewardship means caring well for what God has put in our hands. From the start, people were given work and creation to care for. We were to plant, build, and make good things with what we were given. Using a new tool to do that well does not mean reaching for God's throne. It can mean doing the work He gave us with the humility Babel lacked. Humility means not placing ourselves above God or others.

How to tell the difference in your own use

Ask the Babel question of your heart, not the tool: what is this for, and whose name does it honor? If you use AI to lie, cut corners on truth, treat people as if they do not matter, or see yourself as your own provider, that is the spirit of Babel. If you serve people honestly and care for your time and gifts, your purpose is different.

The builders were scattered because of what was in their hearts. Keep your heart right and keep Him in sight. A powerful tool stays a tool.
